In a summer jam-packed with exciting events all across the Kaipara region, one that attracted a select following was a workshop at Kai Iwi Lakes under the auspices of Circus Kumarani. The Dargaville-based troupe of supporters and performers promised a fun-filled family festival and delivered just that with bells on at the 3rd Northland Circus Festival which was held over five days from 23rd to 27th January.
Kumarani creative director, Thomas Hinz, said more than 200 local, national and international circus enthusiasts flocked to the Kai Iwi Lakes and transformed it into a kaleidoscope of activities with each day ending with ‘awe-inspiring performances’ at the evening shows.
"People came to the lakes from all over — from Auckland, Christchurch and from overseas and they said it was well worth the effort. Many say they plan to return next year."
"We had workshops galore to choose from, with Trapeze/Aerial, Acrobatic and Unicycle being most popular. Tony, a world class performer, showed off some stunts which had everyone amazed.
From Belgium, Elias impressed with Diabolo skills and Irene from "Artfool" our Aerialist, shared tricks of the trade with trapeze artist hopefuls and in public performances." Thomas said that everywhere one looked something wonderful was happening. "People from all walks of life gathered, shared and wondered.
"On three of the five nights of the workshops, evening performances were held and the ‘Big Top’ was packed out as amateurs and professionals teamed up and had the audience wrapped around their fingers."
An additional two days of intensive training for circus aficionados was a success, with demand for even more next year.
"It was an amazing event, with a community vibe seldom found. It couldn’t have happened without a wonderful team of dedicated helpers. The weather also played its part."
Feeding the cast and crew at the event "was a breeze" according to caterers. "We fed between 20 and 50 people for lunch and dinner over the five days. Don’t ask me how much food we went through — but plenty of vegetarian meals — and a roast lamb dinner one night which surprised a few people."
Thomas said Circus Kumarani were hugely thankful for the support of Creative Communities and the Scottwood Trust.
