Support for farmers markets in the Kaipara is being promoted by Ngati Whatua for the quality of produce and the social benefits they provide.
North Kaipara Connexions Project Manager for Te Runanga o Ngati Whatua, Darlene Lang, says the markets “are packed with fresh vegetables, fruit, locally made cheese, jams, preserves, flowers, plants, fresh baking and handmade chocolates.
Shoppers are able to stock up on wholesome fresh local produce and it becomes a meeting place for friends and family to meet and offers social interaction for some people that don’t get a lot.”
She added that the markets bring flow-on benefits by being close to town where shoppers can continue their spending.
“They are also tempting for tourists, providing a great insight into regional qualities and an ideal place to sample local produce and experience the Kaipara region.
“The market offers good value for money for shoppers and provides small businesses an affordable way to sell their wares which increases sustainability within the community. It is becoming increasingly important for people to know where the food is grown and by what method.
“Buying fresh at markets has many customers becoming more enthused about home grown vegetables and fruit and all serve to remind consumers of how things used to be.
“Small producers who might find it difficult to meet the demands of large supermarket chains can still find an outlet, thus enhancing their chances of survival in an increasingly competitive food trading environment.”
She added that through buying locally grown produce, consumers are giving their support to local producers as well as helping to revitalise rural economies.
