“I was lucky enough to go on a ten day voyage aboard the tall ship, Spirit of New Zealand. I would like to thank the Warkworth Rotary for their very kind sponsorship for this trip. This has certainly been an experience I have always wanted to do.”

The club provides funding on an annual basis by way of two Kylie Jones Memorial scholarships for students from the club area.

“We aim to assist young people to develop as worthy citizens and leaders in our community and are happy to support projects such as the scholarships,” says club youth director, Joy Paxton.

Learning to sail the 45-metre, three-masted tall ship helps students learn life skills and teamwork while developing self-discipline, communication, confidence, self-reliance and leadership.

“I have gained hugely from this trip and am thinking of going back one day as a leading hand. It was a great experience and I think if anyone gets an opportunity to go on the Spirit, they should de nitely take it.”

Tony said, while on board he made lots of great new friends and built on his leadership and self-management skills.

“The Bay of Islands was a fabulous destination. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to make friends with people from all over the country, from places like Wanaka and Gore.”
