Terrie Vazey, the first woman to be successful at hunting a boar at Aratapu Tavern
Terrie Vazey made history at the annual Aratapu Tavern wild boar hunt being the first woman to successfully get a boar since the category was added to the competition four years ago.
Broadie Ruatara also achieved a first as it is the only time an under 16 year old has successfully hunted a pig at the Aratapu competition.
The hunt began midnight Friday in secret hunting spots around Northland and ended at Aratapu Tavern on Sunday afternoon for festivities and prize giving.
“It was a great success for the hunters — they brought back the most pigs this year with 14 boars as well as the first lady and junior to actually get a pig,” says proprietor of the tavern, Donice Hall- Morris.
Carl Wrathall took home $500 for heaviest boar weighing in at 68.5 kilograms and he also snagged the prize for average weight.
Around 100 enthusiasts joined the hunters to celebrate with a spit roast, ice cold beers and tunes played by Urban Country from Ruawai.
