Kaipara’s favourite gourmet food truck, Off the Grill has turned one after a successful first year in business.
Lance Nepia spent the last decade working as a chef before taking the plunge and starting up his own food truck business along with his veterinary wife Nena, based out of a 1977 Bedford camper.
“After a trip to Aussie the street food scene caught my interest and the food truck idea grew from there. The best part about it is feeding the people you know — it’s locals helping locals,” said Lance.
Based in Mangawhai, Lance and the food truck have enjoyed a busy summer season of events travelling to markets, weddings and other functions in the area as well as fitting in visits to regular spots in Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto. “We travel to Maungaturoto quite a bit as it’s one of our favourite places to cook and also the busiest. We’ve been lucky with local businesses reaching out and letting us use their car parks on a Friday night,” he said.
Although Off the Grill has been a big learning curve, Lance says the local support has been “wicked” along with the positive feedback they have received.
“We’re pretty keen to build on what we achieved so we’re keen to step it up and venture out more and take on more festivals.”
Off the Grill offers three food options at a time and Lance has a tried and trusted menu of 20 dishes which he rotates. Check their Facebook page for updated locations and times.
