The Kaihu Rugby Club made it onto television last week as the Toyota GrassRoots show came along to their home games last Saturday.
The show is a 21 week series that covers the entire club rugby season and features rugby matches and stories from some of the 600 rugby clubs throughout New Zealand. The Kaihu club came to be on the show because member Melissa Collins saw a post on the Toyota GrassRoots rugby facebook page.
Kaihu club president Graeme Hutchings contacted the show saying they were keen and within two weeks a camera crew was at a rugby match between Kaihu and Southern.
The club had two games on that day, the U17 competition Kaihu vs Awanui which ended in 52-5 Kaihu win and the Bayleys South Zone Championship Kaihu vs Southern, which ended in a 49-7 win for Kaihu.
“We had a great day, we always have a great day when Southern comes up or we go down there — there’s a pretty good relationship between the two clubs,” said Graham.
“It’s a very community orientated club and we have a really strong committee with a big focus on youth, as well as on our senior rugby.”
As well as filming the game, the crew also interviewed club captains, coaches and long time members from both Southern and Kaihu.
