Young people with a physical disability will next month have the opportunity to join other young Northlanders to try new sports, in a day designed to engage youth in sport.

Registration is now open for the Northland Junior Disability Sports Day on June 16 organised by Parafed Northland and the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, alongside NorthTec, for those aged between seven and 21.

Sports on offer include track and field events, visually impaired sports, boccia, wheelchair basketball, powerchair football, badminton and taekwondo.

So far registrations have been received from Dargaville Primary School, Intermediate and High School. Parafed Northland, chairwoman, Vicki Meyer hopes to see lots of people involved in the day.

“Sport is such a powerful vehicle for young people to socialise and learn about themselves and for someone who lives with a physical disability there is no difference.

The sports day will be held at ASB Stadium in Whangarei runs from 9am-2.30pm and gives participants a chance to become part of the Northland team which will compete at the Halberg Junior Disability Games later this year.

Registrations for the Northland event close on May 24.
