Pouto beef farmers Chris and Karren Biddles have won a gold medal at the Steak of Origin competition in the Best of Brand — Wholesale and Food Service section.
Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s annual “celebration of all things beef” was held at The Cloud on Auckland’s waterfront, which the Biddles attended.
“It was exciting and satisfying to win,” said Chris.
“We have previously won the Grand Champion in 2007 and again in 2013.
In 2012 we won the producer of the decade. We have had a further nine finalist entries over the 15 years the competition has been run, plus eight finalist entries in the brand part of the competition.
“When we first won, I just said it was luck. But because we’ve been so successful for so long, without a doubt it is the type of cattle we breed.”
Te Atarangi Angus is the breed and Chris says that it’s a quick maturing animal, it’s moderate in size and calves easily. “The majority of the winners have been breeding similar cattle over the years,” he adds.
