New era for arts

Dargaville and Mangawhai artists and locals came together at the newly renovated Muddy Waters Gallery to celebrate the Dargaville opening of the Kaipara Art Awards exhibition last Friday.

After being at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery for the last two weeks, the 46 entries were transferred to the new white walls of the Muddy Waters Gallery.

“It’s just such a privilege to be able to bring this back into Dargaville and for the people of Dargaville to have such easy access to it,” said Kaipara Art Awards chair John Pickworth.

“I very much see it as being the pinnacle of achievement for this area for artists to strive for. After having completed the refurbishment of the gallery, it’s a space that any city would be proud of. The last piece of the puzzle is managing the lighting.”

In a speech on opening night John paid homage to the artists for putting their artwork out there to be judged, “as it takes a lot of courage.”

The exhibition runs until Tuesday, October 31 and the gallery hours are Monday-Friday 11am-3pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm, at 43 Hokianga road.
