David Eades, Kevin Robinson and Wayne Wrack from the Maungaturoto Bowling Club won the men’s triples section, at the National Club Championship Finals in Dunedin last week.
The team met around a year ago at a Mangawhai tournament and “it was just by luck that we got together,” said David. “We just gelled really well and this last year we’ve had a low loss record.”
Last November the team qualified for the national finals by winning the Northland regional competition.
“We went down there with the mindset of making the final and winning. We played really well and we’re pretty rapt,” said Kevin.
“The competition was really tough, there were really top teams that we played against. I’ve played for 41 years and have been to nationals before, but it’s my first national win. Plus in Northland it’s the first team or person that’s won a New Zealand title in 91 years. It was a real history making victory, which makes it even better,“ said Wayne.
David says that “the real influence of the team is Wayne, and what he brings to the team is not just his ability, but also his ability to make his teammates play well.
“While we played we had a very large contingent from the Far North who urged us along, which was really really good, they supported us right through it.”
