A subsidised workshop offering practical advice about good governance is coming to Dargaville and is open to all committee members of non-profit organisations.
Organisers, Volunteer Northland, are encouraging anyone on a committee, especially the younger generation, to make the most of the opportunity.
“There are over 5,000 committee member positions at organisations registered with the Charities Commission in Northland alone,” said Volunteer Northland’s secretary and manager, Bart van der Meer.
“There are about 4,500 individuals volunteering for this. Research shows that providing professional development to volunteers is one of the most appreciated forms of acknowledging their commitment; donating time, skills and energy.
“We do encourage young people to join, at no cost.
“The minister of the Community and Voluntary sector, Peeni Henare, told us; ‘No more Youth Advisory Groups, they should be on the board’.”
The workshop will be run by Sandy Thompson from LEAD Centre for Not for Profit Leadership, and aims to provide tools to ensure a board is effective in adding value to the work that organisations do.
The workshop will be held on Monday, August 6, 9.30am–4pm at a venue yet to be confirmed. Visit volunteeringnorthland.nz for more information.
